The handwritten description on this wax phonograph cylinder's box reads "There is a Happy Land" /Speed 2A". The introduction on the recording itself says that it is sung by Gladys, Hilda, Oliver, Leslie and Hampden Wall on Sunday afternoon 14 June 1903.
Gladys, Hilda, Oliver, Leslie and Hampden Wall were the five oldest children of Cromwell Wall (1866-1937) who made this recording. Cromwell Wall is standing on the right of the attached photograph with his wife Minnie beside him. Gladys, Hilda, Oliver, Leslie and Hampden are standing third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh from the right, with their younger brother Howard and younger sisters Muriel and Phyllis on the left. The photograph was taken at their home 'Lyndale' in Parkhurst Road, New Southgate.
The hymn 'There is a Happy Land' was written by Andrew Young in 1838 and remains popular today.
