The handwritten description on this wax phonograph cylinder's box reads "25/5/03 - Organ piece by HCW? [in D major?] / Taken in Baptist Chapel New Southgate".
'H.C. Wall' refers to Henry Cromwell Wall (known as Cromwell Wall) (1866-1937) who made this recording. Cromwell is standing on the right of the attached photograph with his wife Minnie (beside him) and their nine children (from right to left) Gladys, Hilda, Oliver, Leslie, Hampden, Doris, Howard, Muriel and Phyllis at their home 'Lyndale' in Parkhurst Road, New Southgate.
The New Southgate Baptist Chapel was in Grove Road, near to the Walls' home. Grove Road Baptist Chapel was bombed twice during the Second World War but was repaired and still stands. It has now been converted into sheltered housing. On the site of its School Room stands the Christian Centre of Christ Church New Southgate and Friern Barnet Baptist/United Reformed Church.
