Oscar's Uniform
Messenger Boys were employed by the Port of London Authority at the time to ferry messages between docks and offices.
Recruited as soon as they left school, Messenger Boys were given a uniform and were expected to look smart at all times.
Oscar often mentions his uniform in his daily dairy entries and recorded separately in his diary the length of time that each item of his uniform was supposed to last:
Trousers - 6 months
Tunic - 6 months
Leggings - 6 months
Boots - 1 year
Hat -1 year
Overcoat - 2 years
Satchel - 3 years
