Measurements: whole: 155 x 190 mm

This invoice from a linen draper's shop called 'The Blackamoor's Head' is for fabric. During the 18th century images of exotically dressed Black people frequently decorated shop signboards. Black people came to live in London from the 1570s onwards, usually brought from the West Indies as enslaved people or servants. This advertising imagery draws on the glamour associated with owning or employing Black people, many of whom were made to wear eyecatching outfits.
