Title: A & M Halal Meat Co Ltd

Date: 1979-1981

Accession number: 2003.5/69

Material: paper

This poster printed in English, Urdu and Gujarati announces the opening of the A & M Halal Meat Company's Upton Park shop. The neighbouring boroughs of Newham and Tower Hamlets have London's largest Muslim communities. The poster claims that they are 'the first and only producer and suppliers of Halal lamb bergers, halal sausages, polony, seek kebabs and meat in the UK'. Addressing Muslim customers, it cites the Koran which urges believers to 'Eat Halal'. For meat to be 'halal', the Muslim religion requires animals to be slaughtered with a single cut to the throat, preferably by a Muslim butcher.
