Students carry signs reading 'No war for oil profits'. During the 1950s, President Nasser of Egypt did much to promote union between the Arab countries of the Middle East. Many were emerging from postwar colonial domination by European powers. Nasser gained great prestige for his handling of the Suez Crisis, which toppled the English Prime Minister Anthony Eden. However, the Cold War superpowers the US and the USSR continued to intervene in Middle Eastern affairs. They were looking for political advantage as well as economic gain from oil, the Middle East's most lucrative raw material.
