The Socialist magazine Left Review commissioned Humphrey Spender to photograph hunger marchers on their journey from Jarrow, Tyneside, to London. These men were amongst 200 from Jarrow, who brought with them a petition for support for their hometown, where unemployment and deprivation was widespread. Sympathisers provided food for the men on their 25-day journey. Other hunger marches organised by the National Unemployed Workers' Movement had taken place since 1932.
