Woodcut: Hampstead Incident

Measurements: 75.9 x 56.2 cm

Hampstead Incident is an imaginary scene set near the distinctive entrance to Hampstead tube station. The central figure is drawn from life but Irwin saw him on Seven Sisters Road in Finsbury Park. In this print, he has been 'transplanted' to Hampstead. Irvin shows the tramp staggering down the road, bottle in pocket. In his stupor, the tramp is oblivious to cars that collide around him and the aggressive responses from drivers, pedestrians and Hampstead residents. A Londoner, Irvin has produced a significant body of work on urban alienation. He distorts perspectives and exaggerates forms to emphasise the discordant chaos of London life.
