Handbill: A & M Halal Meat Co Ltd

Date: 1979-1981

Accession number: 2003.5/69

Printed in English, Arabic and Urdu, this poster announces the opening of the A & M Halal Meat Company's Upton Park shop, run by Ebrahim Mulla. For meat to be 'Halal', the Muslim religion requires that slaughter of animals be carried out with a single cut to the throat, preferably by a Muslim butcher. Addressing Muslim customers, the poster contains an extract from the Koran asking believers to 'Eat Halal from the earth'. The neighbouring boroughs of Newham and Tower Hamlets have London's largest Muslim communities.
