An open day exploring architecture and archaeology
Saturday 1 February 200
London has always been filled with amazing buildings, many of which no longer survive. Famous sites such as the Roman basilica and the Globe Theatre only exist in paintings and drawings and in fragments in the Museum of London’s stores.
A special open day at Europe’s largest archaeological archive and research centre (LAARC) on Saturday 1 February 2003 will take visitors back in time by allowing them to handle original stone carvings, bricks, tiles and decorative glass that were once part of London’s skyline.
They can join experts to find out about structures in the past - from the Roman forum to Medieval monasteries, Tudor palaces and theatres to Victorian terraces - and find out how archaeologists can re-construct a building from holes in the ground.
Visitors can discover a range of decorative techniques used by Londoners and try their hand at making their own paper Roman mosaic or a tile to take home with them. Behind the scenes tours will let enthusiasts uncover more about the amazing finds that are housed in the archive.
