Londoners at work

2 February 2005

Londoners at Work, an exhibition of photographs at Museum in Docklands from 2 February to 5 June 2005, is the first in a series of temporary exhibitions at one of London’s newest museums.

Eighty fascinating images, many of them on display for the first time, have been drawn from the unrivalled photographic archives of both the Museum in Docklands and the Museum of London.  They capture over one hundred years of working life in London.

The photographs show the diversity of London at work – in offices and factories, warehouses and docks, on the river, in the street and at home.  They portray authority, companionship, exploitation and emancipation, poverty and pride.

With their focus on people and their relationship to work, a dominant part of all our lives, these images have the power to draw the viewer in, arouse their curiosity, amuse and even dismay.

Photographs such as Wolf Suschitsky’s atmospheric 1930s photograph of men asphalting wooden blocks in the Charing Cross Road, or the unknown photographer’s picture of stevedores unloading a lighter in the London Docks, offer glimpses of lost worlds.

The Museum in Docklands is housed in a converted Georgian warehouse on West India Quay, next to the gleaming towers of Canary Wharf, shops, restaurants and the river.

It is only 15 minutes from Bank or Tower Gateway by Docklands Light Railway to West India Quay – a high ride through London’s East End; a short whiz down the Jubilee Line to Canary Wharf, or a leisurely river trip by Thames Clippers to and from central London piers.  It makes an exciting day out for all the family.

Entrance to the exhibition Londoners at Work is free with a valid Museum entrance ticket, £5 for adults (£3 concessions).  Entry for under-16s, NUS cardholders and disabled carers is free.  Tickets are valid for a year.

The Museum in Docklands is part of the Museum of London Group.
