Auction all stitched up!

28 November 2006

The hammer’s come down on a sought after piece of London space.

After just over a week of bidding the result is in and there is a winner of Museum of London’s Space in a Case eBay auction.

One person has paid a very reasonable rate for a square metre in this prime city location and they now get the chance to exhibit their bit of London, at Museum of London until February 2007.

Someone wanted a tribute to their prize-winning greyhound, another wanted to put their vital statistics in the case to try to get a date but the winning bid had their idea all stitched up…

The winner, a textile student at Goldsmith’s College plans to design a unique piece for the case.

Lee Slack bid £720 to get the chance to display his take on London in the Museum of London. He has yet to finalise his design and the student, who is from Cumbria but now living in Greenwich, says he wants it to remain a little bit mysterious until it is finished and the new exhibit is unveiled.

Jack Lohman, Director of Museum of London says “We’re absolutely thrilled that the auction has been won by a Londoner who plans to use the space for a creative response to his adopted city. We can’t wait to see his finished piece.”

Notes to editors

  1. The Museum of London is the only museum to tell the story of London from pre-historic times to the present. From what Romans ate for dinner to the Great Fire, Medieval pointy shoes to a Victorian street and dazzling Lord Mayor’s coach.
  2. In March 2007 the Museum of London will begin an £18 million initiative to redevelop the galleries which tell stories of London from 1666 up to today. The Capital City project will also include a new Clore Learning Centre, a theatre and a central Sackler Hall containing an information zone and coffee point which will open in 2009. The museum will remain open throughout the project.
  3. For more information, including about how to support the project by “buying a year of London’s history” and becoming part of the new display see www.museumoflondon.org.uk/buyayear or call 020 7814 5505.
  4. On 16 November 2006, the Museum of London launched a major new website called “Map My London” (www.mapmylondon.org) which will revolutionise the way the history of the city is gathered and displayed.  People are invited to upload their impressions of the city, and create an emotional memory bank. The website will be available in the new 20th Century gallery and embodies the Museum’s commitment to make history relevant to all London’s communities.
