Cemetery summaries

The Cemetery summaries provide information on burials groups in London and have been compiled to represent specific burial populations based on their geographical and stratigraphic distribution.

One cemetery may have been encountered on a number of separate archaeological excavations, but it is the cemetery which provided the common space of relevance to a population.

This means that the cemetery may consist of more than one site code or that one site code may encompass several cemeteries constituting separate events.

Osteology summaries

The osteological summaries are a very brief overview of selected aspects of the database. The purpose of the summaries is to generate an introduction of the cemetery and its research potential. It will provide the reader with an insight into the nature of the site and any work previously undertaken on the osteological collection. Please refer to the methodology statement for details on recorded information and methods applied.

The pathology tables express the number of entries under specific pathology codes and it is therefore possible that some of these have been included as differential diagnosis options. Under no circumstances should the figures from the osteological summaries be quoted as actual results. For comparative data, always refer to published material or LAARC archived reports.

Cemetery summary information

The summaries do not include all recorded information and has therefore been summaries in “summary information”, which can be viewed as a separate excel file linked to the osteological summaries. These provide a break down of the number of entries under each section recorded to inform on the file size for the “data downloads”.

Data downloads

The available “data downloads” offer a more comprehensive insight into the raw data set recorded on the database and will provide information by context number on the individual skeletons recorded. All information is downloadable in an EXCEL format from this web page. In order to understand the data in the downloads, it is strongly recommended that you download the database manual (PDF 194kb) and list of abbreviations and acronyms (Word 80kb) for the pathological descriptions.

Photographs

Photographic images available are frames of reference as a link to the osteological summaries. They should not be used in any other capacity outside this web page.
