Victorian poverty

The modern woman

This tour with curator Beverley Cook will look at objects on display in the Galleries of Modern London to explore how the role of women changed in the 19th and 20th centuries. Looking at exhibits in the People's City gallery Beverley Cook will discuss how women moved away from their traditional, domestic roles to develop a more active and public presence in the city.

19th century posters

Join curator Julia Hoffbrand as she speaks about the technical advances that transformed poster-making in the 19th century. New typefaces where seized upon by advertisers to create bold and eye-catching notices. Wood-block engraved illustrations were often used to add interest. The Fanshawe dress

Textile conservator Kate French talks about the work involved in conserving and displaying one of the most magnificent fashion pieces in our collection. The Fanshawe dress, made from the finest Spitalfields silk, is thought to have been worn by Mrs Ann Fanshawe when her father, Crisp Gascoyne, was Lord Mayor of London in 1752-53.
