The Romance of East London
& Vortex Jazz Club

Thursday 6 March

During this fantastic evening of entertainment vistors were able to join photographer Peter Marshal and curator Cathy Ross to explore how the rich fabric of East London has been an endless source of stimulation for artists, photographers, writers and filmmakers. There was also be a rare chance to see the remarkable 'Pub', a short film by Peter Davis. Filmed in 1962, ‘Pub’ is a loving portrait of The Approach Tavern in Bethnal Green. Now a gastropub with art gallery attached, The Approach in the 1960s was a classic East End pub: the heart of its community and packed with a boisterous crowd of working-class East Enders.

And to follow vistors were treated to the sublime sounds of the The Vortex Jazz club which had chosen a special EAST line-up consisting of three exceptional artists. Olivia Chaney, Ayanna Witter Johnson and Nick Mulvey are unique and talented young composer/ performers who are currently making a name for themselves on London songwriter circuit. Although their music heralds from three distinct influential musical styles - Folk, Jazz and African, all three performers share a passion for music.
