Brazil
in Mind
Friday 4 May - Sunday 5 August 2001
Marking the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Europeans in Brazil,
Brazil in Mind drew attention to one of the most invisible, yet influential
communities in London today.
The display focused on several talented Brazilians currently working
in London, including Mariannita Luzzati who has exhibited her paintings
internationally; Inacio Ribeiro who makes up half of the fashion house
Clements Ribeiro; and Laura Rodrigues from the London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine.
Brazil in Mind explored the affinities between Brazil and London through
film, photographs, objects and interviews. Highlights included four spectacular
carnival headdresses from the London School of Samba, photographs by
Brazilian photographer Maria de Fatima Campos and a specially commissioned
film by Brazilian filmmaker Jorg Wagner about London's 'invisible Brazilians'.
A series of events was organised to accompany the exhibition including
Brazil Night, a celebration of Brazilian culture with live entertainment
and dance, featuring singer Monica Vasconcelos. It was also the inspiration
for the Museum's May half-term programme of family events.
Brazil in Mind was supported by
in association with the Brazil 500 Festival.
