Celebrating the Coronation. Henry Grant Collection, Museum of LondonIn 1977 requests for ‘any man willing to help decorate the street’, for ‘donations of cakes and jellies’, and for ‘records that may be used at the disco’ were made by the Residents Association of the Rock Estate in Finsbury Park. They were organising one of the estimated 4000 street parties held in London to mark the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth.

In 1953 more than a million people went to central London to watch the Coronation procession. Thirty thousand of them slept overnight on the Mall to ensure they got a good view. And more than 20 million people in Britain watched the Coronation on TV, heralding a new era for the television industry.
