ELEPHANT AND CASTLE FAMILIES 1994 - 2000

In 1994, photographer Leigh Hirst was commissioned by the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre to take pictures of their customers. She placed a sofa in the mall, covered it with a white sheet, set up a light, and spent two days recording a cross-section of the diverse local community.

On display were 30 of these curiously moving images of South London Families. Each captured a particular moment in time and records the thoughts and emotions of the sitters, many of whom returned to leave a revealing message on their portrait.
