Windrush Windrush
Irwin Clement in Stalbridge Street, 1964

The exhibition, Windrush - Sea Change, on display at the Museum of London from 14 May to 28 June 1998, and sponsored by Western Union, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush.
In May 1948 the troopship docked at ports across the Caribbean, picking up passengers for the month long voyage to London. There was nothing unusual about the route. For centuries ships had traded between London and the Caribbean colonies. What really distinguished this journey was the passengers. The Empire Windrush brought the first post-war Caribbean migrants to London.

The passenger list from the Empire Windrush will be on display in the exhibition at the Museum of London for the first time. It gives us a glimpse into the lives of these early migrants. For the majority it was their first trip. For over 400 West Indians, the Empire Windrush offered the chance of something new.

The exhibition includes contemporary film of the arrival of the Empire Windrush, as well as taped interviews with some of those who made the journey, with their initial impressions of London and reflections of their experiences over the last 50 years.
