Look back at the British Empire in India and the trade in brilliant fabrics and fragrant spices which brought London its first taste of the subcontinent. See Indian Princes at high society balls in the fin-de-siecle city, and Princesses campaigning with the suffragette movement for women’s right to vote. Track Indian cooking’s ascension to a staple of the city’s gastronomic scene, and the London stories behind familiar brands.
In this 60th anniversary year of Indian independence and the creation of Pakistan, discover the long history of Indian representation in London's political life, from Dadabhai Naorji, MP for Finsbury Central in 1892, to Lord Bilimoria the first Zoroastrian Parsi in the House of Lords who took his seat in July last year; not forgetting the political stars of 1947 Ghandi, Nehru and Jinnah, who all trod the London political stage.
You can also explore the diverse religious celebrations that have become part of London’s cultural fabric and take a colourful look at how the Bollywood phenomenon sang and danced its way into London cinemas from the early 1970s.
Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate and explore this fascinating and significant aspect of London's cultural history.
