Finger ring

Date: 1400s

Although this heavy gold ring is plain on the outside, the inside is decorated with engraved figures of St Thomas Becket in archbishop's robes, the Virgin and Child, the Holy Trinity (God the Father enthroned holding the crucified Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove), St Anne with the Virgin, and St Antony with his T-shaped cross. These sacred images would protect the wearer, and the protection would no doubt be stronger since, as they were placed on the inside of the ring, they would be in direct contact with the hand.
