Jug

Date: late 1300s

This fine bronze jug is inscribed '+THOMAS:E[L]YOT/ +HI RECOMAND ME TO EU/ +WYLLEAM:ELYOT'. One member of the Elyot family probably commissioned it to present to another on a special occasion. It was clearly a prized piece. Its condition shows that it was kept well polished, and when the handle broke an iron band was riveted on to replace it. It may have been made for the Elyots in one of the foundries outside Aldgate - the letters in the inscription are similar to those used on church bells. Thomas and William Elyot have not been identified.
