Comb

Date: Late 700s - 800s

A number of large fine combs were recovered from the Royal Opera House site. They date from the late 700s to 800s. The combs are made of a number of 'tooth-plates' held together by iron rivets through two linear connecting plates. Combs were made at this site and probably elsewhere in Lundenwic. They were intended for personal use by both men and women. They may also have had a symbolic function, and could have been marriage gifts.
