London's groups, clubs and societies today

Name of group: Stepping Stones Farm, founded 1979

Object donated: Cow Horn

"The cow horn belonged to our first ever cow, Louise. She died of old age earlier this year. She was very special to the farm. Louise is greatly missed by all our regular visitors. We would like some memory of her to be kept for many more years."

On the left is a photograph of Louise.

In January 2000, the Museum of London began collecting items from London's groups, clubs and societies. We asked them to:

'Choose something that represents who or what you feel you are at the start of the 21st century.'

The astonishing results on show in this exhibition provide a unique, often surprising, insight into the diverse interests, passions and beliefs that bring people together in London. This display of objects and group statements allows these very different Londoners to speak for themselves about their preoccupations and activities today.

Group life reflects, and sometimes creates, the dominant trends in society. London's particular history gave rise to some of the earliest clubs and societies in the world. Amid a huge urban sprawl, we create smaller worlds for ourselves in order to make sense of city life. Groups remain an integral part of contemporary London society, and whether we participate or benefit indirectly, they impact on all our lives.

Collecting 2000 reveals the many cultures and faiths that make London a world city at the start of the 21st century. The exhibition gives a privileged inside view of the lives of the people of London.

Details of the groups and their contributions can be found on Collecting 2000 contributions.

The exhibition was accompanied by a book, available from the Museum shop for £5 + post and packing (020 7814 5600) and by a series of events.
