City senses

Took place: October - December 2006

Misita: ‘I enjoyed going out to visit other museums for inspiration. I felt like I was in charge, but still working with others as motivated as me in a group. Coming up with ideas and seeing them through was also very exciting’

Calvin:  ‘My favourite part of the project was the whole routine, and meeting new people.’

Local people from A4E Ltd in Hackney, who provide training to assist unemployed people into work, used the Museum’s Roman and Medieval galleries as inspiration for a set of multi-sensory activity backpacks to enable pupils from special educational needs schools to explore London’s past.

The group received training from a special education needs teacher about the needs of SEN pupils and researched the galleries with a curator. Following development of content, the group got involved with a variety of craft techniques to make the activities for the bags. The bags were trialled in February 2007 by Oaklands School and have now been launched to schools. If your school would like to use the bags please contact our SEN Officer.
