Tudor and early Stuart London

These galleries look at life in London between 1485 and 1666, when London underwent dramatic changes. The earliest map of London is on display, along with pottery, jewellery, paintings, shoes, religious artefacts and a model of the Rose Theatre. Pupils can view two room settings and visit our Great Fire of London experience.

The displays address themes relating to National Curriculum study units: town and country life, commerce, trade, food and entertainment, Tudor buildings, the impact of the closing of the religious communities, the plague and the Great Fire of London. Exhibits relating to key stage 3 study units include: the reformation and religious persecution, relations with other European countries, Charles I and the Civil Wars, Oliver Cromwell and the Commonwealth, Charles II and the restoration.

There is a gallery plan in the Picture Bank.
