The Sackler Hall
The stylish centre of our stunning new galleries.
The Sackler Hall is a vast, contemporary hub that forms the heart of the Museum and provides a space for rest and refreshment. At one end of the hall, a bank of computer pods enables you to find out more about any object on display as well as some of the items in our stores. A changing programme of exhibitions celebrating creative talent in London also takes place here, often featuring contemporary art from the Museum’s own collections.
A film, commissioned in collaboration with Film London, is also showcased within the Sackler Hall on an array of nine plasma screens and a suspended elliptical LED curtain, which creates a giant 45 metre loop around the space. This commission marks the beginning of a biennial competition, the first of which, LDN24 saw pioneering multimedia artists, The Light Surgeons, bring to life the Museum’s vision of a contemporary and evocative piece that presents a modern portrait of London life today.
The Light Surgeons have responded with a visually poetic and graphic concept that uses film and live feeds of statistical information to explore 24-hours in the life of the city. This electronic artwork, coupled with its innovative elliptical display, forms an impressive sculptural installation and a dynamic media space within the Museum.
