In 878 the West Saxon king, Alfred, rallied his troops to defeat the Viking invaders. By 886 he had captured the London area and made peace with the Danish Viking leader, Guthrum. The Danes controlled north and east England - an area called  the 'Danelaw'. Alfred re-built the city of London ('Lundenburg') inside the old Roman city walls. He laid out new streets, lined with wooden houses. Landing-places were built along the waterfront for ships to load and unload cargoes.
