The East End art scene: A cycling tour with Neil Cummings

Explore the East London gallery scene on two wheels with art world insider and Professor at Chelsea College of Art & Design, Neil Cummings. Head out along the Regents Canal and River Lea to explore how former industrial warehouses, art and finance flow together in the economy of the Thames.
DETAILS:
- The bike tour will meander up through the Limehouse basin, across the Limehouse cut to the river Lea, up to Three Mills, down the bow cut and back to the museum via the Regents Canal.
- The tour will visit former industrial sites, Chisenhale, Matts Gallery, artists studios, start-ups and trendy micro-breweries all in the shadow of the Olympics.
- This tour includes 1 hour of easy cycling and is therefore
suitable for participants with a moderate level of fitness.
- Please bring waterproofs in case of rain and snacks to keep up energy levels along the way
- Please bring your own bike!

News from nowhere: The Thames and utopia

In 1890 William Morris published News from Nowhere, a science fiction utopian vision of 22nd century London as seen from a trip along the Thames. Join Dr Gregor Claude for a river tour inspired by this seminal text and find traces of the artistic, political and technological utopias that have been imagined along the Thames.
DETAILS:
- The boat trip leaves from Southbank Pier at 2pm on Sat 22nd Jun and returns to Southbank Pier by 6pm.
- The boat trip will explore the utopian thinking of William Morris with particular reference to his seminal text News from Nowhere published in 1890.
- The text will be situated in the broader context of the history of the Thames and the utopian thought that the Thames has inspired.

Photography field trip: Landscapes of the Estuary

Discover the beautiful and timeless landscapes that lie just beyond the edge of our city. Explore the remote tranquillity of the Estuary with local experts and professional photographers, before ending the day at the world-famous Whitstable Oyster Festival.
DETAILS:
- The field trip leaves by coach from London Bridge station at 10am and will return to London Bridge Station at 7.20pm.
- The coach will stop at four locations along the Estuary: Cliffe, Chatham, Lower Halstow and Whitstable.
- At each location you will be encouraged to explore the estuary through walks and group discussions. You will be set photographic tasks that will engage you with key elements of the landscape at each location.
- Lunch will be spent aboard LV21, a historic 40-metre steel-hulled lightship which has been transformed into a floating art space and performance facility. Bring a packed lunch and explore this incredible vessel with an exhibition and talk.
- The trip ends at the world famous Whitstable Oyster Festival where you will have 1.5 hours to explore the town with your camera and soak up the atmosphere. Some participants may prefer to stay in Whitstable to watch the sun go down and sample the gastronomic delights of the festival.
- For participants not planning to return on the coach at 6pm, it is advisable to book ahead to secure restaurant reservations and lower tariff train fares. The train takes 1hr30min from Whitstable to London Victoria. The last train departs at approx. 10.30pm and arrives at London Victoria at approx. midnight in time for the last tubes. Full train travel details should be checked closer to the time.
- This field trip is suitable for participants with basic to advanced photography skills, but not complete beginners. Participants will need to provide their own cameras.
- Please bring a packed lunch and pocket money for oysters and crab cakes!
