Before You Start (1 of 7)
How do I prepare to handle an object?
Before you handle an object, you must ensure that you are safe to do so, and that you will not damage the object.
Clothing and accessories
Check your clothing and accessories, as these can catch, scratch, bash, mark, or become entangled with objects. Remove or secure any of the following before handling any objects (ensuring that you have a secure place to keep them).
- Jewellery, watches, rings and other accessories that could come into contact with the object
- All pens, badges and dangling passes
- Loose cuffs
Tie back long hair, and wear a clean lab coat and any other PPE that is necessary.
Time
If you are going to move an object, ensure that you have sufficient time to complete the move, and that you are not distracted. If you feel rushed, it is better to postpone the move – as this is when accidents tend to happen.
