Who is responsible for managing pests?
Within museums, archives or historic houses, the management of pests usually falls to two groups of people:
- Conservators or collection care specialists
- Building or facilities managers
A Preventive Conservation department (maybe known as a Collections Care department, or part of a Conservation department) is responsible for preserving the collections. This includes activities such as:
- Monitoring and controlling the environment
- Object handling and movement
- Emergency planning
- Pest Management or Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
Note: In smaller organisations, the responsibility for these activities may lie with a house manager or curator.
