Physical barriers (continued)

Housing objects in secure cabinets and/or placing objects in (acid-free) boxes will also provide a barrier to pests. If items are too big, or will be damaged by placement in a box, a tyvek cover will afford some protection, especially if it is specially made for the purpose, such as a coat cover for a costume.

It is also important to have a good maintenance routine to ensure that any holes in the building are filled, and that air ducts have appropriate filters installed – and that these are regularly maintained. Mice can get through a hole the size of your little finger, so even the smallest gap should be filled. This maintenance should extend to the exterior of the building, and include the removal of vegetation close to, or growing on, the building – as this can harbour pests, and provide easy access to windows or air vents.
