Acute Mania

'HJ', a woman with 'acute mania' before treatment and whilst convalescent. Photograph taken at Bethlem, 1850s.
Little is known about Bethlem's past patients. The hospital's administrative records give only a bare outline. In the middle of the 19th century a remarkable series of photographs adds an extra dimension to the hospital record, enabling us to encounter the patients as real people with a physical presence.
