TREATMENT

'WG', a man suffering from 'acute mania'. Photograph taken at Bethlem, 1850s.

The purpose of these photographs is not known. Some show patients before and after recovery, others show patients just on admission.

At the time photography was seen as having a use in treatment. Patients with delusions were confronted with the image of their real selves: others were said to be calmed by the process of being photographed.
