HADRIAN
Emperor AD117-38
Hadrian was adopted as Trajan's successor in AD117. His reign was crucial
in Roman history, as he abandoned Trajan's conquests in the east and
began a policy of consolidation. He travelled the Empire more widely
than any previous emperor, touring the provinces between AD120 and 131
and visiting Britain in AD121-2. He secured the frontiers of the Rhine
and Danube provinces, Africa and Britain, building Hadrian's Wall from
AD122-5. He was a great lover of Greek culture. He first adopted Lucius
Aelius and then Antoninus Pius as his heirs
