LUCIUS AELIUS

Died AD138

His real name was Lucius Ceionius Commodus but he was renamed Lucius Aelius Caesar on his adoption by Hadrian in AD136. He was a popular choice and his daughter was betrothed to the young Marcus Aurelius. In AD137 he was given military responsibility for the Danube in order to prepare him for imperial power. He died 6 months before Hadrian, possibly of tuberculosis. Coins of Aelius, issued only during the reign of Hadrian, are rare.
