LUCIUS VERUS

Emperor AD161-9

Lucius Aelius Aurelius Commodus was the son of Lucius Aelius Caesar. He was adopted by Antoninus Pius and changed his name to Lucius Verus. He was brought up with Marcus Aurelius. When Antoninus Pius died, Lucius became joint emperor with Marcus Aurelius. Following victorious campaigns in Armenia and Parthia, he took the titles Armeniacus in AD163 and Parthicus in AD165. He married Marcus' daughter Lucilla and was fond of sports and gladiatorial spectacles. He died of a stroke in AD169.
