MARCUS AURELIUS

Emperor AD161-80

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus had been adopted by Hadrian. When Antoninus Pius became emperor, Marcus was betrothed to Faustina the younger, Antoninus' daughter. On the death of Antoninus Pius, Marcus insisted that he should rule jointly with Lucius Verus. Widespread threats of invasion meant that the last ten years of his reign were spent protecting the frontiers, and he was forced to auction off imperial property to raise a fighting fund. His surviving diaries have made him one of the best-known Roman emperors, revealing a religious, intelligent and highly-educated man
