1935 – 1960
999 emergency telephone services were introduced in 1937. In order to help cut down on crimes the City of London put out police pillars on the streets from where you could call the police station with enquiries and emergencies.
During the Second World War the military and civilians started to rely heavily on telephone communication. Between 1939 – 1945 telephonists were expected to keep the lines open even during gas attacks.
