This painting shows
Covent Garden market bustling with street criers, shoppers and
prostitutes. Designed by Inigo Jones in the 1630s, the portrait-painter
Sir Peter Lely was the first artist to move there in 1662. Two
years after Lely's death in 1680, the Court portrait painter Godfrey
Kneller moved into the neighbouring house where he worked until
1702.
