Portrait painter Francis Hayman had a studio in St Martin's Lane, on the edge of Covent Garden. This double portrait of Hayman and his patron Grosvenor Bedford does not depict Hayman's actual studio. Instead it is an idealised space with classical busts and Old Master paintings, to flatter both the artist and patron's social aspirations.
