As artists multiplied around Covent Garden and Leicester Square, so a parallel community of paint-suppliers, called 'colourmen,' grew up to meet their equipment needs. John Middleton had a shop in St Martin's Lane between 1785 and 1818. From his family's stylish dress and furnishings, Middleton clearly made a good living.
