Sir Joshua Reynolds,
President of the Royal Academy, gained enormous success within
the art world through his painting and self-promotional abilities.
Concern for his public profile meant he paid a huge sum for a
house in Leicester Square where he lived between 1760 and 1792.
He added a gallery and an elegant room for portrait painting,
to entice sitters for whom visiting the studio was a sociable
activity to share with friends and family.
