From the early 18th century, artists aspired to achieve the success of Sir James Thornhill. He was renowned for decorative history schemes and was one of the few English artists to compete successfully with French or Italian artists in London. He marked his success by taking a large house on Covent Garden Piazza in 1718 and running a free art academy.
