In the 18th century social life was conducted in coffee houses. Old Slaughter's, close by the St Martin's Lane Academy, was the meeting place of a group of artists including Hogarth, Louis François Roubiliac, Francis Hayman and the young Thomas Gainsborough. It was a hotbed of new artistic ideas and styles.
