St Martin's Lane Academy was an artist-run school holding life-drawing classes. Originally opened in 1720 it was re-established by Hogarth in 1735 and helped pave the way for the later Royal Academy schools. It had a powerful influence in the professionalisation of art, attracting a cross-section of both young and established artists.
