Painter, engraver and
social satirist, William Hogarth first lodged in Covent Garden
with his father-in-law artist Sir James Thornhill. By that time
the Piazza had become a place of noise and traffic, with its dairy
and vegetable market. Hogarth moved to 31 Leicester Square in
1733, seeking a more genteel place to work and set up his studio
and print shop.
