George Romney (1734-1802)

The first artist to move to Hampstead permanently was the portrait painter George Romney who built a house and studio on Holly Bush Hill in 1796. The move was not a success because Romney had no interest in landscapes and had moved too far from London to maintain his city-based portrait clients.
