This watercolour depicts one of the ponds near the bottom of the Heath. Constable did not often paint such cultivated landscapes. The elegant couple indicates Hampstead's popularity for afternoon promenading. Constable has shown Hampstead's proximity to London by including the distant view of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral.
