John Constable was one of England's greatest and most progressive landscape artists. He came to London in 1799 to study at the Royal Academy Schools and discovered nearby Hampstead Heath with its unspoiled landscape. Because of his wife's ill health, Constable rented various summer lodgings around Hampstead village from 1819, before leasing 40 Well Walk in 1827.
